Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

An organization that is non-profit situated inside Houston’s Museum District in Houston, Texas, is the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Established in 1948, the museum was set up to exhibit present artworks for the general public. It is a non-collecting institution it strives to provide for the needs of every visual arts form as well as the recent past and to provide new perspectives in art. It is a place for interaction with the general public and promotes a greater understanding of contemporary art by offering educational programs. Contemporary Art Museum Houston occupied the entire structure that Gunnar Birkerts designed. The museum was inaugurated in 1972.

Seven Houston residents have established The Contemporary Arts Museum to provide a contemporary art space to the community and record the role of the arts in the modern world through presentations, exhibitions, and various other activities. The museum began by presenting exhibitions at various locations across the city, often using its own Museum of Fine Arts.

In the 1980s, The Museum was growing significantly, allowing it to expand its sphere of influence by exhibiting exhibitions that toured and presented performances, surveys, Still-life contemporary art exhibitions, shows with a single artist, and many more. In the 1990s, however, the museum shifted its focus to focusing on artwork created during the last 40 years and tried to expand its international reach.
