A neighborhood that is located in the west-central area of Houston, Texas. Montrose comprises an area of 7.5 square miles that is roughly bordered by Interstate 69 to the south, Allen Parkway up to the north, South Shepherd Drive to the west as well as Taft up to Fairview Bagby to Highway 59 to Main to the east. Montrose is among Houston’s most important cultural zones, known for its hippie-influenced culture, food scene, arts scene, and lively nightlife.

In the 70s and the 80s, Montrose was the center of the gay community in Texas. The bohemian vibe of Montrose was the catalyst for both the Westheimer Colony Art Festival in 1971 and the subsequent Street Fair in 1973 that would later be referred to as”the” Westheimer Street Festival. From the 1970s onwards, the region became the heart of Houston’s homosexual and lesbian population. The region was home to an estimated 30-40 gay bars in the past. It included The Bayou Landing, thought to be the biggest gay dance hall that was located between the coasts, and a variety of LGBT activist groups, like those of the Gay Liberation Front.
