Downtown Houston

Just a few days after Texas gained its independence in the Battle of San Jacinto, the City of Houston was founded. John K. and Augustus C. Allen purchased 6642 acres in Buffalo Bayou for $5,000 on the 26th of August, 1836. The town has been named Houston in honor of the recently deceased battle hero Sam Houston. The Allen brothers inaugurated their village and offered the land at $1.00 per acre to the general public on August 30. They promoted the sale throughout the Union, and soon, people began flooding into it. In the year following, with 1200 people, The Houston city of Houston was officially incorporated and continued to grow.
