A community of 6,000 acres is situated in southwest Houston, Texas, just outside 610 Loop and inside Beltway 8. The neighborhood’s name is derived from the Meyer family, who bought and owned the land of 6,000 acres southwest of Houston.
Meyerland is the heart of Houston’s Jewish community. Meyerland is home to Houston’s Jewish Community Center, Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, and other synagogues. Meyerland is located within the floodplain of 100 years, and homes are susceptible to flooding during heavy rain events. Meyerland was devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The photos and stories of the flood-stricken community featured the media stories about the natural disaster that struck Houston.
History
The subdivision was originally rice fields. 7 Joseph F. Meyer Sr. initially acquired the land in small sections starting in 1885. The land was left unoccupied for many years, but some were leased to cattlemen and farmers. Joseph Meyer was confident that someday his land would fall inside the Houston city boundaries. George Meyer developed 1,200 acres of his field to form his Meyerland subdivision in 1955. Vice-President Richard Nixon was at the celebration of the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the subdivision. Meyerland was among the first communities with deed restrictions within Houston. The city of Houston. Bed Bug Exterminator Houston
